Carrier Appetite Research

Research public carrier appetite guides and underwriting bulletins so producers know which carriers are actively writing a given class of business before they spend time on a submission.

When to use

  • A producer asks which carriers currently have appetite for a specific industry class, region, or account size.
  • You need to refresh knowledge of a carrier's published underwriting guidelines, excluded classes, or minimum premium thresholds.
  • A renewal or new-business submission needs a shortlist of carriers worth approaching, based on current public appetite guides.
  • Someone asks for a summary of recent bulletins or appetite changes from a carrier's public site.

Playbook

  1. Clarify the target class of business (e.g., NAICS code or trade description), account size, and region from the request before starting research.
  2. Use browser-search to find public appetite guides, e.g. "site:carrier.com appetite guide contractors 2026" or "carrier underwriting bulletin restaurants".
  3. Use browser-navigate to open each promising result, such as a carrier's public appetite-guide page or producer-resources bulletin index (e.g. https://www.examplecarrier.com/producers/appetite-guide).
  4. Use browser-extract to pull the relevant sections: classes accepted, classes excluded, minimum/maximum premium, target geography, and any special program notes.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 across multiple carriers (aim for at least 3-5 sources) to build a comparable set of appetite data points.
  6. Note the publication or "last updated" date shown on each source page; flag any guide older than 12 months as potentially stale.
  7. Use write-file to save a structured summary (carrier name, class, appetite status, size/geography limits, source URL, date observed) to the shared research location the requester specified.
  8. If a carrier's appetite guide is not public, paywalled, or requires a portal login, do not attempt to log in — note it as unavailable and move to the next source.

Failure modes

  • Appetite guides go stale quickly; always surface the date of the source and flag anything undated or older than a year rather than presenting it as current.
  • Search results often surface third-party summaries or expired PDFs instead of the carrier's own current page — verify the domain and prefer the carrier's official producer-resources section.
  • Do not infer or state whether a specific account would be accepted, what premium it would receive, or which limits or carrier to recommend — that is underwriting and advice, which is out of scope; escalate coverage or placement questions to a licensed agent.
  • If a page requires authentication (agent portal login) to view appetite detail, stop and report it as inaccessible rather than trying credentials.

Done when

  • A written summary is saved via write-file listing each carrier's public appetite position, its source URL, and the date observed, for the requested class and region.
  • Any stale, unavailable, or portal-gated sources are clearly flagged rather than silently omitted.
  • No coverage, limit, or carrier recommendation is made — findings are presented as raw research for a licensed agent to act on.
